What goes wrong on a Turbo grill

Why won't my Turbo grill light?

Usually the electrode, the spark module or the rotary igniter. Ignition is the repair we do most on Turbo grills. Electrodes rust in their collector boxes, spark modules crack with age, and rotary igniter knobs wear out. Our technician tests the spark at each burner, then replaces the electrode, module, igniter or wire that has failed.

Why are my Turbo burners rusted, or not heating at the back?

The burners have clogged or rusted out. Burners are the second repair we do most on Turbo grills, close behind ignition. On older Turbos we find burners rusted through, and an owner's review tells the story: the burners "weren't heating in the back" until we replaced them all and the igniter. We fit new stainless burners and check each one lights blue and even.

Why is my Turbo getting flare-ups?

Burned briquettes and worn-out trays. Turbo's ceramic briquettes crack and burn away, and the trays under them rust, until grease drips straight onto the flame. We replace the briquettes and fit new stainless briquette trays.

Why won't my Turbo knobs turn?

A seized valve, or a missing knob on a bare valve stem. We free up and lubricate the valve, or replace it if it is past that, and replace missing or broken knobs.

Why is my Turbo grill not getting hot?

Often the regulator or the hose, or burners that are clogged. We test the regulator under pressure and replace it if it has failed, clear or replace the burners, and convert the grill if it is set up for the wrong gas.

Where to find your Turbo model and serial number

Turbo grills do not all keep it in the same place. On a built-in Turbo, look under the drip tray, on its handle, and behind the control panel. If you have the owner's manual, the model may be written in it. Can't find it? A photo of the whole grill and its control panel is usually enough for us to identify a Turbo.

Turbo parts we fit

Turbo is the brand we work on most, so these are parts we fit week in, week out, at your home:

  • Burners, including new stainless burners for older Turbos.
  • Ceramic briquettes and stainless briquette trays.
  • Igniters: electrodes, collector boxes, spark modules and rotary igniters.
  • Valves, valve stems and knobs.
  • Regulators and hoses.
  • Side burner parts, hood thermometers, grates and warming racks.

For older Turbo grills we source parts from more than 100 vendors, and a photo of the grill is usually all we need.

Turbo grill cleaning

Most of our Turbo jobs are cleanings. Our full cleaning takes your Turbo apart to its components:

  • Inspect: gas line, regulator, valves and gaskets before anything gets wet, and any sign that rodents have moved in.
  • Vacuum: ash, debris and anything nesting comes out first.
  • Degrease: hood, firebox, drip tray, briquettes and trays, knobs and shelves.
  • The parts that take the heat come out and are cleaned separately: grates, warming rack, briquette trays and burners.
  • Polish: the stainless inside the firebox as well as out.
  • Our 10-point tune-up: igniters adjusted, valves lubricated, regulator checked, burner ports cleared, new ignition battery, air shutters set, and more.

A side burner is cleaned and checked on the same visit.

Repair or replace?

When one part has failed, a repair is often all a Turbo needs, even a 20-year-old one. If the repair would cost close to a new grill of the same quality, we say so, and you get a price for each option. If you replace it with a grill from us and your island's cut-out does not match, our GrillFitter® custom laser-cut frame closes the gap.

Turbo owners we look after

Most of our Turbo jobs are in San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Marcos.

“SD BBQ did a fantastic job giving new life to our 20 year old Gran Turbo ... the burners weren't heating in the back. Dan's team came out and replaced all the burners and the igniter, completely cleaned the entire grill ... Our bbq looks and works like it is brand new.”

Ralph Tilley, June 2025, Google review

“Hugo did a fantastic job with my Grand Turbo grill. This is the third time he has been here and I would like to request him in the future.”

James Mullin, April 2025, Google review

Asked about Turbo grills

Can you still get parts for an old Turbo grill?

Usually, yes.

Turbo is the brand we work on most, and many of the Turbos we see are 15 and 20 years old. Burners, briquette trays, igniters and valves for older Turbos can usually still be found; we source them from more than 100 vendors and fit them ourselves. Send a photo of the grill and we will price the repair.

Do you work on Grand Turbo grills?

Yes.

Grand Turbo, Turbo Elite and Turbo STS are the lines we see. The usual work is a cleaning, then burners, briquette trays, igniters and valves. Owners have had us bring back a 20-year-old Grand Turbo with new burners and a new igniter.

Why does my Turbo click but not light?

Usually the electrode is rusted or out of line in its collector box, or the spark module has cracked.

On older Turbos the rotary igniter wears out. We test the spark at each burner and replace the part that has failed, then light every burner before we leave.

Can you convert my Turbo to natural gas?

Often, yes, depending on the model.

We check the model first, confirm the conversion and the price, then fit the parts and test every burner. A grill on the wrong gas burns low, so it is worth checking after a move.

How often should a Turbo be cleaned?

A full cleaning every one to two years keeps a Turbo close to new in looks and in how it cooks, and a light cleaning every six months in between keeps the grates and briquettes right.

Do you work on Turbo freestanding grills?

Yes.

We clean and repair Turbo grills on a cart as well as built-ins. The parts and the cleaning are the same as for the built-in version, and we do the work where the grill stands.

Do you sell Turbo grills?

No, we do not sell Turbo.

We clean and repair them, and if you would rather replace yours, we sell and install other built-in grills, with a free consultation at your home and free installation when you buy the grill from us.

Can you replace the briquette trays in my Turbo?

Yes, and it is one of the most common Turbo repairs we do.

Burned briquettes and rusted trays are what cause most flare-ups on a Turbo. We fit new stainless briquette trays and fresh briquettes, clear the grease under them, and check the burners while the trays are out.

How much does a Turbo repair cost?

It depends on the fault and the part.

Send a photo for a free estimate, or we find the fault at the grill; either way you get the price before any work starts. Cleaning is priced by grill width, and a repair found during a cleaning is priced before we do it.
